Aberdare ranges – A cradle of life

The Aberdare Range is a mountain range in central Kenya, located just south of the equator running roughly 100km North to South between Nairobi and Thomson’s Falls. The range is part of the eastern branch of the East African Rift System, and is characterized by a series of peaks and deep, forested valleys.

There are two main peaks, Ol Donyo Lesatima (3,999 m) to the north and Kinangop (3, 906 m) to the south, separated by a long ‘saddle’ of land above 3,000 m. The small peak of Kipipiri (3, 349m) flanks the main range to the west, linked to it by a formerly forested valley at around 2,700 m.

There are also rivers that emanate from the Aberdare Forest Like River Athi and River Tana, both of which flow into the Indian Ocean. The Ewaso Nyiro river also emanates from the Aberdares draining into the Lorian Swamp and finally the River Malewa that drains into Lake Naivasha. All these rivers support a vast eco system of flora and fauna and are also a source of livelihood for millions of people living near them.

Exploring the Aberdare Range can be a fantastic adventure for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Some popular activities in the area include hiking, bird watching, game drives, and cultural visits to nearby communities.
One of the most popular destinations in the Aberdare Range is Aberdare National Park, which covers an area of about 766 square kilometers. The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, leopards, hyenas, and a variety of antelope species. Bird watchers will also be delighted to know that the park is home to over 290 species of birds.

Another popular destination in the Aberdare Range is the Karuru Falls, which is located near the town of Nyeri. The falls are one of the highest in Kenya, with a total drop of about 273 meters. Visitors can hike down to the base of the falls, where they can enjoy the cool mist and take in the beautiful scenery.
Overall, exploring the Aberdare Range is a great way to experience the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of Kenya. Whether you’re interested in hiking, wildlife watching, or simply enjoying the stunning scenery, there’s something for everyone in this beautiful part of the world.
