You have always wanted to summit all the great peaks in Kenya but have lacked the proper information on how to go about this? Worry no more, our high altitude backpacker training is designed to build your endurance, knowledge on your road to becoming an experienced alpinist. Below is an outline of the five hike program, the gear you need and what we provide to make your search for adventure a great success.
The program
Hike 1
Ngong Hills hike (2,460m) – This is a good starting point for your high altitude training. The hike is relatively easy, with a gradual ascent and is a great way to acclimatize yourself to the higher altitude.
Team Building activities will be conducted after to help with team cohesion and allow interaction with members of your class as well us our guides. Here we shall also learn about proper nutrition, breathing skills and how to handle emergencies in the wild.
Hike 2
7 Ponds hike (3,650m) – This hike will take you to higher altitudes, where the air is thinner, and the temperatures are cooler. It will give your body a good workout, and help improve your endurance as you get ready for the more challenging hikes.
Hike 3
Elephant hill hike (4,090m) – This hike is quite challenging, with steep inclines and rocky terrain. It will push your body to its limits, and help you adapt to the high altitude environment.
Hike 4
Ol Donyo Le Satima – Dragon teeth (4,001m), is a mountain located in the Aberdare ranges in Nyandarua County, Kenya. The mountain is named after the Maasai word meaning “mountain of the bull calf” and is known for its unique rock formations referred to as the “dragon’s teeth”. Been the second highest mountain in Kenya, this will help you acclimatize as you prepare for the ultimate hike to Mt. Kenya.
Hike 5
Mt. Kenya hike (4,985m) Three day hike- This is the most challenging hike on the list. It is a long and strenuous climb that requires a lot of mental and physical preparation. It will test your endurance, strength, and stamina, and get you ready for any high-altitude challenges you may face in the future.
3 day Mt. Kenya hike itinerary:
Day 1: Sirimon Gate (2,600m) to Old Moses Camp (3,300m)
•Start early in the morning at Sirimon Gate.
•Hike through the montane forest to reach Old Moses Camp.
•This is a relatively easy day of hiking, which takes approximately 3-4 hours.
•Spend the night at Old Moses Camp.
Day 2: Old Moses Camp (3,300m) to Shipton’s Camp (4,200m)
•After breakfast, continue ascending through the moorland.
•Pass through Liki North Valley and the spectacular views of the Gorges Valley.
•This is a longer and more challenging day of hiking, taking around 6-7 hours.
•Arrive at Shipton’s Camp, which is located below the summit peaks of Mount Kenya.
•Spend the night at Shipton’s Camp.
Day 3: Summit Attempt (Point Lenana – 4,985m) and Descend to Sirimon Gate
•Start very early in the morning (around 2-3 am) for the summit attempt.
•Hike up to Point Lenana, the third-highest peak of Mount Kenya.
•Enjoy the sunrise and the breathtaking views from the summit.
•Descend back to Shipton’s Camp for breakfast.
•Continue descending further to Sirimon Gate, where the hike ends.
•This day involves around 10-12 hours of hiking in total.
•Celebrate your achievement and head back to Nairobi.
The Gear you need….
This is a general list, and the specific gear you need may vary depending on the hike’s duration, terrain, weather conditions, and personal preferences.
1.Clothing: Layering is key to regulate body temperature. Pack breathable and moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof and windproof outer layer. Don’t forget to bring gloves, a warm hat, and a buff or neck gaiter for added protection against the cold.
2.Footwear: Invest in sturdy and waterproof hiking boots with ankle support. It’s crucial to break them in before the hike to avoid blisters and discomfort.
3.Backpack: Use a comfortable and properly fitting backpack with adequate capacity to carry all your gear. Opt for one with a supportive hip belt and adjustable straps.
4.Sleeping Gear: Choose a high-quality sleeping bag that is appropriate for colder temperatures encountered at high altitudes. Additionally, pack a sleeping pad or mattress for insulation and comfort during the nights.
5.Hydration and Nutrition: Stay hydrated by carrying a water bottle or hydration bladder. Consider using a water filter or water purification tablets for additional water sources along the trail. Pack high-energy, lightweight snacks and meals that provide sufficient calories for the exertion required at high altitudes.
6.Headlamp: A reliable headlamp is essential for early morning starts, late finishes, or unexpected delays. Make sure to pack extra batteries as well.

8.Environmental Education: Sharing knowledge and information regarding the local flora, fauna, geology, and history of the hiking area, to enhance the overall experience.
9.Emergency Response Plan: A well-defined plan to handle emergencies or unexpected situations, including evacuation procedures and protocols.
